White Ribbon Week and Our Library

Dear Parents,

As you know, this week is Internet Safety Week at the school. During library time, grades 1-5 are learning about internet safety as well, which is part of the regular library curriculum.  We have been watching and discussing the videos that are available online atwww.netsmartzkids.org.  After watching, “It’s OK to Tell” from the Netsmartzkids site, we discussed that one great way to keep safe online is to install a filter on your computer.  Did you know that there are many great filters available at no cost online that are both effective and safe to download? Many of your children were very interested in filters and may ask you about them this week.  Some wanted to know how to get a filter, so I promised to send some information home.

Here is an article with simple information to learn more about cyber safety and the types of things you need to know to keep your children safe:

Here are some links to consider for free filters:
• K9 Web Protection:    http://www1.k9webprotection.com/
• eSafely:  http://www.esafely.com/
• If you have windows installed on your computer you should also consider this one: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/features/parental-controls

Other filters to consider:
• Net Nanny (Received the “National Parenting Center” seal of approval): http://www.netnanny.com/
• Online Guardian (Received the “Parents Choice” seal of approval):  http://www.trendmicro.com/us/home/products/internet-safety/online-guardian/
• Safe Eyes (Received the “Good Housekeeping” seal of approval):  http://www.internetsafety.com/safe-eyes-parental-control-software-affiliate.php

Thank you,
Mrs. Peterson
